Sierra Leone: 10 months on…

This past year has seen an exciting step forward in the growth of Christian Surfers globally, as a new chapter begins to take shape in Sierra Leone. What started as a local vision in Bureh Beach—led by a passionate surfers, Steven and Billa—has grown into a collaborative effort between Christian Surfers UK, RYD and Groundswell Aid to build something lasting for the community. With surfboards, resources, and prayers, this project is about far more than surfing—it’s about creating a space where young people can find faith, belonging, and purpose through the waves.

We caught up with Steven to see how things are going on the beach:

What has been happening recently with the surf sessions?
Our surf sessions are still going on every weekend. We have around 7 kids attending, and during the week we have also started spending more time with the kids in the water.

How did the new boards change things for the surfers?
The new surfboards are bringing smiles to the faces of the kids. More importantly, it helps them to understand the power of God. As a team, we are encouraging them and reminding them that with God all things are possible. It is just a matter of time and having faith in Him.

What do the weekly sessions look like now, how many kids attend?
The weekly sessions are still in progress, with around 7 kids attending. We do face some challenges with attendance due to lack of facilities like food and drinks, and also transportation for some of the kids coming from other communities. After the sessions, they still have to go back home, which makes it difficult sometimes.

How are the Surfer’s Bibles being used?
The Surfer’s Bibles have been really helpful for the kids. It helps them to understand the Bible better and in an easier way. Most of them can now read from it without struggling.

Have you seen any cool stories of impact with the local surfers?
One of the coolest stories of impact I have seen is that some of the local surfers have picked their favorite Bible stories. The story of Bethany Hamilton has had a big impact on the kids. They keep coming back wanting to hear more of her testimony from the Surfer’s Bible.

What’s your dream for the surf community in Bureh Beach?
Our dream for the Bureh Beach community is for Christian Surfers to be well known and recognized all over the community and even beyond. We want people to see the power of the Lord and glorify Him.

How can we pray for you?
We pray that God will continue to guide and protect the children and touch their hearts so they can see the truth in what we are doing.
As a team, we ask for wisdom, knowledge, and understanding to lead the kids in the right direction.
We also ask for strength and motivation to overcome challenges and weaknesses.
We pray for the wider community, that the Lord will open their eyes and give them courage.
And finally, we ask for God’s favor, healing, and provision so we can continue running this work.
